Today driving home from work I was following a X1. It has 2 exhaust tips. The left one look normal, but the right tip looked blocked off. Later behind it at a red light it was open. I kept on watching, and it took off. Around 15-20kph it closed off. Why would it do that?

Sport Exhaust with a valve opener?

You would think that it would open, no close once it goes faster.

Most/all of the N52s have an exhaust like this with the flapper valve, I think it’s mostly for noise reduction at lower speeds/smaller throttle openings. There’s the “golf tee mod” which is just using a golf tee to force the valve open.

At a certain rpm the vacuum opens up the valve so that you can here more exhaust sound. It shuts once you dip below the rpm to prevent droning.

My e36 had the butterfly valve in the exhaust. It was vacuum controlled in that car, so it would open on heavy throttle application and close at light application. I assume it’s computer controlled now, but probably follows the same open/close scheme, it probably opened while he was accelerating up to speed, then closed once he got out of the throttle.

I suspect your theory is correct but I doubt it uses vacuum. Only because Mercedes uses electric motors for the same thing.

My 1er had the exact same butterfly valve, it’s vacuum.

Oh ok. Weird though.
